I chose to build a model of the Amerigo Vespucci, because it’s a fairly difficult model and also of a very different type than my previous two models. Also, I like the fact that the focus of this ship is more on the deck fittings than on the hull. The total build time was about 4500 hours, spread over 10 years (2006-2015).

The keel for the ship was laid in 1930. A few months later, on februari 22nd 1931, the ship was finished and ready to sail. The ship is named after the famous italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512), who’s image can still be seen on the bow of the ship. Currently, it is a training vessel for the Italian navy. More info on the ship (and the explorer) can be found on Wikipedia.
